THE FRIAR,
DISCOVER THE BLACK BARDENA
Linear route. Long Jump 4,6 km. Elevation 219 m. Estimated tour time: 2,5 hours.
The route begins next to the parking lot near the Corrales de Bea, there we find an information panel with details of interest.
The path heads west, borders the fields and is marked, the markings to follow are white and green; The Friar's head is visible during the tour. During part of the journey we traveled along cattle paths and found some hills.
The initial slope is not excessively steep, however, the ground may have loose stones, so caution should be taken. Further on the slope is a little more difficult, to climb the slopes of El Fraile, but the views make up for it: they are impressive.
After traveling approximately 2,2 km past the slopes, there is a fork. We take the path to the right to climb to the top. The one on the left is a path with the best views of the place.
Continuing the route to the top, at 600 meters you will find the Cabezo del Fraile. At the summit, the remains of what was one of the medieval castles of the Bardenas Reales are still preserved: Courses of ashlar stone and the cistern for the water reserve, excavated in the rock.
In addition to the remains of the castle, at the top there is a mailbox in which mountaineers leave cards stating that they climbed this peak.
It is a route that can be done all year round, except during the central hours of summer days.
— This route does not have shade, so you should choose to do it very early if you go on warm days, in addition to wearing appropriate clothing and sun protection. During the tour you will not find water sources, so you must be cautious and bring enough. And yes, the beauty of the landscape and the views of the Bardenas Reales are worth it.
The NA-126 highway borders the Bardenas, and we will find several dirt roads that take us towards it, it is important to be attentive and take the correct one. Just before crossing the border between Navarra and Aragon, we will take a wider track, with an indicative sign and a bicycle route panel. In the distance we will see a high mountain, Cabezo, del Fraile, towards which we will head.
– Of the castle there are only a few challenges and a deep well that served as a cistern.
In what is now the town of Berbinzana, next to the Arga River, was the Benedictine Monastery of Santa María, which was donated by King García Sánchez III to that of Santa María de Nájera in the 11th century. In the 12th century, Berbinzana was already a town belonging to the Monastery of Santa María de Nájera. In later centuries, the town had various transactions and owners. By the 16th century it was granted the possibility of holding fairs and markets.
