BERROETA
BAZTAN VALLEY
Berroeta is in the shadow of Abartán, in this ancient mountain there are many megalithic constructions: dolmens, tumuli and cromlechs. The route brings us closer to the peaks, and following the Camino de Santiago Baztanes, we will soon enter a forest where we will find enormous chestnut trees with capsicum shapes, pruned to facilitate the harvesting of their fruits, a staple food in times of subsistence. On the way back we will enjoy the views and once in Berroeta, its beautiful farmhouses and its church.
Built in the 16th century, a later renovation added the baroque tower. It is accessed through a semicircular arch protected by a rustic porch.
All of Baztán proudly displays the checkered shield of the valley on the facades of their houses, but there are some, like this one in Berroeta, with particular shapes and symbols.
This is the house of a famous Carlist brigadier, Martín Luis Echeverría, who displays on its façade the shield of the valley with rockery decorations and a helmet.
