Burgui is the gateway to the Roncal valley, the southernmost town of all and also the one with the mildest climate. In other times, a castle on the rock dominated the hamlet where the hermitage of the Virgin of the Castle is located today, and since the Middle Ages it had a stone bridge with a photogenic silhouette, through which the migrating shepherds crossed the Esca River on their way to the mountains. Bardenas. A dam or "port" with a steep ramp reminds us of the rafters who descended through the cold waters of melting ice on their way to the wood factories of the south. This tradition is maintained on Almadía Day, when the roncales descend the river as their hard-working ancestors did.

In its term there are important naturalistic values such as the Balsas de Sasi or the Foz de Burgui, declared a Natural Reserve and which has one of the largest colonies of vultures in Europe, along with numerous rock birds that nest on its cliffs.

There are two properly signposted interpretive trails in the town that lead to the Foz de Burgui and the Basari fir forest, in addition to numerous paths, tracks and paths for mountaineering lovers.

History

Due to its border location with Aragon, it had a very important castle for the defense of the valley and which remained in service until the beginning of the 16th century following the conquest of Navarre by Ferdinand the Catholic. In the place where the medieval fortress stood, the hermitage of the Virgen del Castillo is now located.

Remains of the Benedictine monastery of Urdaspal still remain in its area, which was visited by Saint Eulogius in the 8th century, and which, after its disappearance, became a feudal manor and palace. Read more

In the past, he used the head of the bleeding Moorish king as a shield on a bridge under which some rocks commemorated the battle of Olast that took place near this town. After the heroic behavior of the Roncalese people in the War of the Convention of 1797, Charles IV added the castle and the greyhound to his shield, like the rest of the seven Roncalese towns.

Art

Inside the Church of San Pedro - from the 16th century - there is the old organ of the Leyre Monastery, abandoned after the confiscation of Mendizábal, and a baroque altarpiece from the 17th century that shows a sculpture of San Sebastián from the 17th century. XVII and several Gothic style chalices.

The Roman bridge welcomes us at the entrance to the town with its unmistakable postcard structure. It still preserves its four original arches, its old cant and its cutwaters to tear the waters of the Esca River. A few meters upstream, a small dam or "port" through which the rafts descended reminds us that logging, along with livestock, has been the main occupation of its inhabitants.

Traditions

Currently, the almadiero has become a symbol of identity of the town of Burgui thanks to the efforts of the Cultural Association of Almadieros Navarros to celebrate the Day of the Almadiero as recognition and tribute to the trade of almadiero. The Burgui Museum allows this trade to be known throughout the year through numerous photographs, implements and tools, accompanied by audiovisual projections.
