Elizondo is a town located in the Baztán valley. The first vestiges of human settlements in the Elizondo area date back to the Iron Age. During Roman times, the region was under Roman rule and agricultural settlements were established. However, the history of Elizondo is strongly marked by the Basque influence and the subsequent arrival of the Vascones, a prehistoric people who inhabited the region. The Basque culture has left its mark on the place names, traditions and customs of the area.
During the Middle Ages, Elizondo became the capital of the Baztán Valley and was the seat of important noble families, such as the lords of Baztán. The town experienced significant development during this period, with the construction of churches and palaces.
During the following centuries, Elizondo continued to be an important administrative and economic center in the Baztán Valley. Over time, emblematic buildings were built, such as the parish church of Santiago, which dates back to the 18th century, and the Casa del Valle, headquarters of the Government of the Baztán Valley.
