FORT OF SAN CRISTÓBAL
MOUNT EZCABA
It is the mountain of the people of Pamplona who you will see climbing, many of them on bicycles, to enjoy the views from the top. Upstairs, the surprise of the San Cristóbal fort awaits us, a powerful construction built to protect the Navarrese capital during the Carlist wars. With the arrival of aviation, the fort fell into disuse until between 1934 and 1945 it was converted into a prison, from which in a spectacular escape, 795 prisoners escaped, the vast majority were captured and many of them executed.
Route 5,3 km. Circular.
PRACTICAL TIPS
-We offer you two options, the one that starts from the town of Artica, which in addition to being longer has steep slopes in its initial sections and the one that starts in the middle of the port, which is more affordable for all ages.
-The route crosses the San Cristóbal fort, now abandoned. Be careful when going down into the pits as there is no type of protective railing. The views and the powerful stone construction are impressive.
-If it has rained a lot the roads become impassable, be especially careful when descending.
