IRURITA
BAZTAN VALLEY
On this short walk we are going to visit Irurita, a town that has a robust 18th century church and numerous palaces, among which Jauregía stands out, an old medieval tower to which a baroque building was added, or the Dorrea tower house, which is one of the twelve oldest palaces in the Kingdom of Navarra, with a clearly defensive appearance. Then we will pass through the beautiful neighborhood of Apote to cross meadows and forests and return to the starting point.
Large in size, it was built in the 18th century. Inside, the rich altarpiece and the carving of the Virgin of the Rosary stand out.
A baroque construction was added to the old medieval tower in the 18th century: this architectural jewel has recently been restored and can be visited.
Surrounded by powerful hamlets in this square, the game of laxoa, or glove, is played, the oldest form of Basque pelota.
It is a good example of popular and palatial architecture. The Gastón Iriarte Palace and the Jauregia, also called the Palace of the Marquis of Casa Torre, stand out in Gothic style.
It is one of the twelve oldest palaces in the Kingdom of Navarra. Its appearance is clearly defensive. The 17th century access staircase is especially striking.
We will rest after the climb on a suitable bench, where we can admire a beautiful view of the Apote neighborhood and its enormous hamlets.
