DESCRIPTION AND WHAT TO SEE IN ISABA/IZABA

Isaba is a town with a lot of life. You walk through its narrow cobblestone streets and greet its neighbors who are busy in the gardens, cleaning the doorways, watering the gardens and, ultimately, taking care of their houses and thus beautifying their town. Isaba grew up around the powerful church of San Cipriano, which looks more like a fortress than a temple, and there was another time when at the top of the hill stood a castle of which nothing remains, only the panoramic views from which It dominated the valley and its approaches.

CHURCH OF SAN CYPRIANO

Located in the center of the town, it is a construction with the air of a 16th century fortress built on top of a smaller one from the 13th century that was burned by the French in the 15th century. of which an entrance door is preserved. It has a nave with a Gothic style vault. The main Renaissance altarpiece from the 16th century presents four bodies with very fine Plateresque decoration, and scenes from the Passion or the life of Jesus and the Virgin.

HOUSES OF THE PYRENEES

They are solid constructions with very sloping roofs, many of them emblazoned.

NEIGHBORHOODS AND PANORAMICS

At the top of the castle and in the Barrikata neighborhood are the best views of Isaba.

IDOIA HERMITAGE

For a short and beautiful walk we access this secluded medieval enclave.

HOUSE OF MEMORY

It is a museum with hundreds of ancient pieces that reflect the Ronca identity.

HARD AND OLD TRADES

In the Navarrese Pyrenean valleys of Roncal, Salazar and Aézcoa, the use of forests was essential for subsistence and the rivers were the only way to transport wood to the places where it was sold. This is how the ALMADÍAS arise, rafts made up of several sections of wood tied together and directed by skilled men.

TRANSHUMANCE

TRASHUMANCE has been, and still is, one of the traditions of the Roncal valley. The shepherds with their flocks marched to the Bardenas Reales on the Ribera de Navarra, remaining there all winter. In May they returned to the Pyrenees to take advantage of the pastures in all their greenery.

TIPS

– Isaba is a town to walk calmly and enjoy its many charming corners

– We recommend the walk to the Idoia hermitage, small but robust, which is reached by a beautiful path that crosses the forest.

– The climb up to what was the castle offers a beautiful panoramic view, but there is almost no trace of the castle.

– Isaba has many tourist services: restaurants, rural houses, hotels, shops, etc. and it has a public indoor pool (the price per day ranges from €4,5 for children to €6,5 for adults).
