DESCRIPTION AND WHAT TO SEE IN LOS ARCOS

Los Arcos was always a disputed land, first by Muslims and Christians and then by Navarrese and Castilians, with the town passing from one hand to another. A castle on top of the hill and a wall that completely surrounded its historic center were witnesses of those battles. Today almost nothing remains of such a busy past, just three portals of the walled enclosure and the name of Los Arcos, Read more

granted by King Sancho of Peñalén in memory of the courage demonstrated by his famous archers in the battle of the three Sanchos, and which is proudly displayed on his coat of arms. The other fundamental milestone in the development of Los Arcos was its privileged location on the Camino de Santiago and which brought with it progress and wealth for the town, the result of which arose the spectacular church of Santa María, one of the most beautiful of the Navarrese baroque. . True to its history, Los Arcos continues to be a place of passage and welcome for everyone who visits it.

SANTA MARIA CHURCH

It is the jewel of Los Arcos and one of the most beautiful churches in all of Navarra, which will surprise us with its rich interior decoration. Built throughout the 12th and 19th centuries, it mixes different architectural styles: Romanesque, Gothic, Plateresque, Baroque and Neoclassical.

THE CLOISTER AND THE ALTARPIECES

The harmonious cloister is from the 16th century in a flamboyant Gothic style. The interior of the church has an exuberant decoration based on plasters, paintings and altarpieces, among which the grandiose Main Altarpiece from the 17th century in baroque style and the Visitation Altarpiece from the 15th century stand out.

SANTA MARIA SQUARE

It is the most beautiful and busiest in the entire town. Surrounded by 17th century buildings with porticos with robust stone pillars and semicircular arches, it is always lively with its bars and terraces. At the entrance to the church a beautiful doorway in Plateresque style awaits us.

THE TOWER AND THE PORTAL OF CASTILLA

Los Arcos was a walled city and had up to seven portals, of which we can still admire the Estanco or the Castilla portal, the latter located next to the high tower of the church of Santa María, the most prominent of the entire Navarrese Renaissance.

THE OLD TOWN

The Camino de Santiago runs along the entire Calle Mayor, the axis around which the town of Los Arcos grew. Its narrow streets are home to emblazoned mansions, baroque-style palaces, numerous inns and convents such as the old Capuchin convent with its sober façade.

THE ENVIRONMENT

Land of extensive cereal fields and vineyards hides naturalistic treasures such as those we will find in Mount Piñalba and its stone monoliths next to the beautiful church of San Gregorio Ostiene or the most distant places of the Sierra de Codés and the Urbasa Natural Park.

SANTIAGO'S ROAD

Tired pilgrims arrive from Estella to find rest in Los Arcos, which welcomes them with its four hostels, hotels, hostels, bars, restaurants, food stores and all the necessary services. From there, last stage through Navarrese lands to enter La Rioja.
