HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION OF THE FITERO MONASTERY
It is an outstanding historical and religious monument. Founded in the year 1140, it was one of the first Cistercian monasteries established in the Iberian Peninsula. Its history is linked to the Cistercian Order and it played an important role in the expansion of this religious order throughout the region.
The monastery was built in an initial Romanesque style, although over the centuries Gothic and Renaissance elements were added. Its abbey church, dedicated to San Salvador, is one of the main attractions of the complex. It stands out for its sober and elegant architecture, with a rectangular nave and side chapels.
