HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION OF THE TULEBRAS MONASTERY

Tulebras is a small town that was born under the protection of the monastery of Santa María de la Caridad, founded by the Navarrese monarch García Ramírez, who asked the nuns of the French monastery of Favars to come to Navarra. They arrived in Tudela in the year 1147 to build the first female Cistercian monastery in Spain, but the bustling life of the riverside capital was not compatible with their spiritual way of life so soon, in 1157, they fled to the quiet and fertile lands of Tulebras. She grew up in a monastery and was the cradle of new female Cistercian foundations, the best known of all being the Las Huelgas monastery in Burgos. Monastic life has been maintained since then, and the visit to the monastery is restricted to the church and the museum, rich in artistic treasures. Nearby is a pleasant recreation area next to the Queiles River and the Tarazonica Greenway.

THE MONACAL ENSEMBLE

The monastery is very large, but the visit is conditioned by monastic life, which restricts access to certain areas such as the cloister. As soon as we enter we will see the Baroque style Abbey Palace with its balconies and its coat of arms.

THE CHURCH

It is the jewel of the monastery, Romanesque from the 12th century, with its flared façade, its interior with a single nave that is slightly crooked, and with a Renaissance vault from the 16th century, which replaced the original one that collapsed and which provides richness to the which was a sober Cistercian temple.

THE MUSEUM

The visit is completed with the museum, which has notable pieces such as the Dormition altarpiece, a magnificent Mannerist Renaissance work, the curious table of the Trinity, the remains of a Roman tower, the image of the Virgin of the Bed and rich pieces of goldsmithing.

THE HOSPIDERITY

For those looking to visit the Navarra riverside, or a place for study or meditation, the monastery inn offers single and double rooms, food service and an atmosphere of silence away from the conditions of modern life.
