UNZUÉ PEÑA

The Carrascal Pass was the gateway to Pamplona from the south, and it had to be watched, so at the top of the Peña de Unzué a castle was built, of which there have been references since the year 1.300 and of which hardly anything remains. The climb can be done on two slopes, it is short but hard, and once at the top we will enjoy spectacular views. There are the remains of a tower that the residents of Unzué, with patience, are gradually rebuilding.

PRACTICAL TIPS

– Unzué is very well connected and just 20 minutes from Pamplona. You will find a field to park your vehicle next to the church. It is a short climb but with steep slopes. We present two alternatives:
– The yellow route is the traditional one, the clearest, it is marked with green and white marks and is easy to follow. It crosses a dense forest and takes us with steep slopes to the top.
– The orange route starts from the church and takes us to the top in a detour. It is less marked, it has stone mounds, some plastic hanging on the branches and green signs, and the final section is more complicated, steeper and in a short stretch there is a tied chain that helps you climb on the way up. It does not present any special difficulty if you are in good athletic condition, although with wet ground the matter can be complicated.
– At the top a wide panoramic view awaits us and the remains of the Guerga castle that the residents of Unzué are working hard to restore.
