PERALTA – THE ARGA RIVER,
MOUNTAINS AND ANCIENT RUINS
A pleasant circular walk from the town of Peralta that runs along the banks of the Arga in its first section accompanied by a steep ravine and then enters the Vallacuera valley and climbs to the mountains with its wide panoramic views. We will enjoy the views of the curious succession of small mountains, one after another, traveling through the valley. On our way back to Peralta we will visit the ruins of what was the old medieval town and a small but strategic military post, the watchtower. Once in the town we will pass by a cave with a colorful façade and the elegant and solitary tower of what was the Gothic Renaissance temple of San Juan Evangelista.

In what is now the town of Berbinzana, next to the Arga River, was the Benedictine Monastery of Santa María, which was donated by King García Sánchez III to that of Santa María de Nájera in the 11th century. In the 12th century, Berbinzana was already a town belonging to the Monastery of Santa María de Nájera. In later centuries, the town had various transactions and owners. By the 16th century it was granted the possibility of holding fairs and markets.
