CHURCHES AND FOCES
We are going to an area with a lot of history, which provides the Monastery of Leyre and the Castle of San Francisco Javier, patron saint of Navarra. It is the land of Sangüesa, capital of the mountain merindad, with a milder climate than the northern area, well connected by highway and with two spectacular walks around the Lumbier and Arbayún gorges.
TWO HIKING ROUTES
The two routes have a common characteristic: a river that makes its way between mountains, forming deep gorges with vertical walls. The one that takes us into the Lumbier gorge is the most popular, a walk suitable for all ages, through one of the best-known landscapes in Navarra. The other route is a little further away and gradually approaches the Arbayún gorge, suddenly showing us all its grandeur on the vertiginous walls.
THREE TOURIST VISITS
The advantage of this route is that everything is close… and everything is worth it. Javier Castle is small in size, but well preserved, and keeps the memory of San Francisco Javier, patron saint of Navarra and the missions. The Monastery of Leyre is perched on the mountains, it has beautiful views of the Yesa reservoir, the “sea of the Pyrenees” and an interesting architecture in which its Romanesque crypt stands out. Finally there is Sangüesa, a city of great commercial activity, whose main point of interest is the Romanesque portico of the church of Santa María.
JAVIER CASTLE
It emerged in the 7th century as a watchtower in border lands to which little by little battlements and turrets were added. On April 1506, XNUMX, Saint Francis Xavier, patron saint of Navarra and the missions due to the many trips he made to distant lands, was born there.
LEYRE MONASTERY
It is located in the impressive Sierra de Leyre and above the Yesa reservoir. It began to be built in the 11th century in Romanesque style, to be completed at the end of the 15th century with the Gothic nave of the church. The first kings of Navarra are buried there.

PETILLA DE ARAGON
Petilla de Aragón is a Navarrese island in the neighboring community of Aragón, and its identity is based on its resistance, when against everything against its rock castle it resisted sieges to remain faithful to its king and its land. The castle disappeared but its people remained, in a spectacular environment of mountains and forests, who hospitably receive anyone who comes to visit them. The famous scientist and Nobel Prize winner Santiago Ramón y Cajal, father of the neu, was born there.
