DESCRIPTION AND WHAT TO SEE IN SANGÜESA / ZANGOZA

The history of Sangüesa, also known as Sangüesa/Zangoza, dates back to ancient times. Its strategic location on the banks of the Aragón River has been a determining factor in its development over the centuries.
It is known that Sangüesa was inhabited since prehistoric times, as demonstrated by the archaeological remains found in the area. During Roman times, this region was part of the Roman province of Tarraconensis, and it is believed that a Roman settlement existed there.
In the Middle Ages, Sangüesa acquired great importance as one of the most prominent towns in the Kingdom of Navarra. It was the seat of an important royal court and an important political and commercial center. During this period, numerous buildings and monuments were built that are still preserved today, such as the Church of Santa María la Real, the Vallesantoro Palace and the Roman Bridge.
The Modern Age also left its mark on Sangüesa. During the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, the town remained faithful to the Navarrese crown and played an important role in the resistance against the Castilian conquest. However, it was finally incorporated into the Kingdom of Castile in the 16th century.
The town has an interesting architectural heritage, with buildings from different periods, such as palaces, churches and stately homes. Today, Sangüesa is an important tourist destination in Navarra, attracting visitors seeking to discover its history and enjoy its medieval charm.

Church of Santa María la Real

With an impressive Gothic façade and a rich history, this church is a symbol of the historical and cultural importance of the town. Prince of Viana Palace

Built in the 13th century as the residence of the kings of Navarra, it was later remodeled in the 15th century by order of the prince of Viana, Carlos de Viana. It has an impressive façade with a Gothic doorway and an octagonal tower. Inside, you can see valuable artistic elements such as altarpieces, sculptures and paintings. The church is known for housing the image of Santiago Matamoros, patron saint of Spain, and is an important pilgrimage site on the Camino de Santiago. 

Convent of Our Lady of Carmen

Founded in the 16th century, the convent belonged to the order of the Discalced Carmelites. It stands out for its Renaissance architecture and its beautiful stone facade. Inside it houses an impressive Gothic cloister, a baroque-style church and various conventual rooms. The Church of San Salvador

TIPS

– The jewel of Sangüesa is the portico of Santa María. We recommend that before viewing it, read the attached brochure where we explain the meaning of so many sculptures together. There are works that in addition to simply admiring, it is also convenient to understand them, and this is one of those cases.

– The walk through Sangüesa includes its churches and its numerous palaces and, probably, having a pincho and a beer in one of its bars.

– The typical dish of Sangüesa is pochas, if you see them on the menu of a restaurant, do not hesitate to order them.
