MAÑERU – HERMITAGE OF SANTA BÁRBARA AND PUENTE LA REINA

We will depart from Mañeru, a small town with a well-kept historic center that is grouped around the elegant church of San Pedro. Crossing the highway we will go up to the hermitage of Santa Bárbara, in other warlike times the stronghold of the Carlists, to descend through the forests and extensive grain fields to the elegant bridge of Puente la Reina. We will return along the Camino de Santiago, accompanying the pilgrims on their arduous walk.

Route 9,8 km. Circular

PRACTICAL TIPS

-Mañeru is very well connected through the highway that connects Pamplona with Logroño, between the towns of Puente la Reina and CIrauqui. The historic center is small, the streets are narrow, and we recommend parking at the entrance of the town, trying to disturb as little as possible. It has a bar and services for pilgrims.

-The route is circular and goes up the mountains to the hermitage of Santa Bárbabar to enjoy the panoramic views. The descent is along a well-marked path until we reach the extensive cereal fields that take us to Puente la Reina. We will return along the Camino de Santiago to Mañeru. If the heat hits the route it can become rough, bring plenty of water.

-You can shorten the path by returning to Mañeru along the old road.

-The ruins of the Carlist fortification are reached by an unmarked path. Barely anything remains of its walls and moats. In the hermitage of Santa Bárbara there is a pleasant picnic area, and at the back of the temple a fortified post with loopholes.

-On our way back along the Camino de Santiago we will stop to visit the old monastery of Bargota.
