Basilica of Santiago in the Sierra de Lokiz
Many times when we think about taking a walk through the mountains, the first thing that comes to mind are the spectacular routes or best-known places, but there are times when what we want is not to meet many people and enjoy nature. The Sierra de Lokiz is well known, but it is not one of those places that come to mind first.
In addition to the magnificent views from the Sierra de Lokiz, this route has the attraction of the Raposa Pass or the Ollabarren Eye, a cave-tunnel of about 30 m through which we will pass from one side of the mountain to the other, the Basilica of Santiago that is at the summit, a cave while we go down the mountain along its imposing stairs carved by man and the hermitage of Santa Eulalia in Ollogoyen and its cemetery.
PRACTICAL TIPS
– Leave the car next to the Ollobarren church. We will begin the tour on a track. After a few meters we will find a crossroads. We will follow the sign of the Lokiz mountain range
– From here and for approximately 1 km, we will climb the 400 meters of unevenness that exists between Ollobarren and the Sierra.
– Almost at the top of this climb, we will reach the stone tunnel through which we have to pass to the other side of the mountain, called the fox's pass or the eye of Ollabarren.
– From here we will walk through the mountains to the Basilica of Santiago. A door with a porch is usually open, where we will find a fireplace and a table in case we want to eat and make a fire. From here, the rest of the way will practically be downhill. The views from the top of this descent are spectacular.
– The descent through the Zologorri ravine, in its most abrupt areas, is like a staircase sculpted by man. Along the ravine you can enjoy the beautiful oak groves, holm oaks, beech forests and at their summits griffon vultures and eagles.
– At the end of the ravine, we arrive at the town of Ganuza. We will take the intersection towards Ollobarren right where the beautiful church of Santa Eulalia and its cemetery. Here we will find tables, in case we want to have a last snack before getting to the car.
