LEYRE SIERRA

CASTELLAR CROSS

This is a difficult route, the one followed, and still continue, by the transhumant herds in the known as Cañada Real de los Roncaleses, a long journey from the green meadows of the mountain to the Bardena desert. We start from the Monastery of Leyre, as old as the kingdom of Navarra, to always go up, on an exhausting slope that only rests when we reach the top of the mountain range. So much effort is more than rewarded by the view of the mountains, the Yesa reservoir and the monastery, so tiny in the distance.

PRACTICAL TIPS

-This route has steep slopes, and in the last section, crowning the mountain range, you almost have to climb. The panoramic view compensates for so much effort.

-The route is very clear until you reach the top of the mountain range. Once at the top you will have to look for the path and when you approach the Cruz de Castellar, take a detour to find it since it is not signposted.

-Be careful at the top, because the walls are vertigo.
